Are we entertained by Violence?

I believe we as a society are entertained by violence. Think about the most recent tragic events that have occurred and how much video footage was captured by witnesses and bystanders and then posted on social media. In Tunisia, the gunman was killing people as bystanders held up their smart phones and took pictures and video, why??

What happened to personal safety? Forget about the 5 minutes of fame and run or if you believe in "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep”, STOP THE BAD GUY! Over and over we see people stand idly by and watch crimes happen in front of them. We hear the excuse, “I don’t want to get involved” or “I don’t want to get injured or worse.” To that I say, then run away, don’t stand there and watch or take pictures or video on your phone.  Understandably we should not pull out our firearm and start shooting in an attempt to save the day because we are not trained to do so. Do something, have an Emergency Action Plan. When I teach courses I use the acronym ROAR, React, Overcome, Act/Action, Report.

Recognize and identify potential threats or harmful situations before they happen. Overcome your initial fear, anger, or panic. Don’t freeze, don’t be a negative statistic. Act or Action refers to escaping, hiding, or as a last resort, neutralizing the threat. Report , call 911 or contact the local police. Document what has occurred after you have found a safe location and the incident is done. Be a good witness.

That Guy.
